#1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity

Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers:

  • promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness
  • engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources
  • promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students' conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes
  • model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments

My artifacts demonstrating this standard (What?)

I currently do many projects in my classroom. Some are group projects: writing plays and presenting them, writing and illustrating "wanted ads" for the "Jabberwock". Some projects are independent: writing and illustrating advertisements and brochures, writing and presenting "how to" essays with visual displays. Some projects start out as a group activity and then move to independent work, such as discussing things the students think need improved or changed at school, coming up with possible solutions, and then writing individual persuasive letters to the appropriate party, (School Board, Superintendent, Principal, Teacher's Association, Student Council, etc.).
I see great value in project based learning. The students are active and engaged in their learning. They have a deeper knowledge and more retention from hands on learning. The students learning becomes more meaningful and there is a clearer connection to the real world. The collaboration working on group projects prepares students for working actual jobs and cooperating with their peers. Project learning helps students realize their strengths as well as their weaknesses; allows them to experience being leaders as well as followers. Students working on projects are activated, focused, challenged.
The only downfall I see to project based learning is the assessment is sometimes more difficult. The teacher must develop some sort of rubric for each project.
It is my goal to start incorporating technology into these projects through the use of videos, voice threads, power point presentations, discussion forums or blogs. The tools we've been learning about bring to mind numerous applications to my current classroom projects.

A Broken World
Student pairs rewrote sections of their textbook on a wiki, then gave lectures on their sections, videotaped them, uploaded to Google Video and imbedded in their wiki. They used a blog to reflect on each others lectures and videos. I like the collaboration among the students.
Social Bookmarking
Great way to share websites that might be useful to other teachers of English for resources in Literature and infusing technology into their curriculum. This is where to see my online bookmarks.

Thousand and One Flat World Tales Project
Love the idea of students recording their writing assignments on podcasts and then being able to listen to each other as well as their own and give feedback to each other.I could use either of these to have my 7th graders extend their reading assignments and make predictions about what might happen next and reflect on each others writing.

Collaboration Possibilities Beyond the Classroom
I viewed ePals Global Community. Many of our students have never traveled more than 50-100 miles away from home. Videos of students across the world or even in other parts of this country showing and talking about their schools and their lives are so much more real. I can see this engaging students interest and curiosity on a much higher level of thinking than any textbook could. I also liked the digital story telling and the detailed explanation of the project along with explanation of the project along with steps to be taken and templates for the students to use in creating their stories. I could see doing this with any of my writing classes. I believe I would start with my seventh graders. The Way We Are Classroom Project was laid out very well with objectives, essential and supporting questions, vocabulary, the culminating activity, and a complete list and templates of materials and handouts. Tons of writing skills built into this project starting with e-mails and ending with a digital presentation.

My Reflection on meeting this standard (So What?)

Each of these assignments are designed to promote and support learning through the use of technology.

My Future Learning Goals related to this standard (Now What?)

I want to continue to create more lessons each year integrating technology into my curriculum. My learning support teacher has taken this course and we will work together to motivate and inspire each other in this area.
